For Ramadan 2025, the High Council of Religious Affairs of the Presidency of Religious Affairs has set the amount of fitr at 180 TL. Fitr is an important act of worship that reinforces the spirit of cooperation and solidarity in our religion. In this article, we will examine in detail the 2025 fitr amount, who may receive it, and how it can be donated.
Fitr (Sadaka-i Fıtır) is a required charity that must be given at the end of the month of Ramadan. Its purpose is to allow those in need to share in the joy of the festival. It also serves as a means for a person to complete their fasting and attain spiritual purification.
Unlike zakat, which is based on a person’s wealth, fitr is given as a gratitude for one’s own existence. It is obligatory for every Muslim who possesses wealth exceeding the nisab—the minimum amount of assets, which is calculated as the value of 200 dirhems of silver (approximately 561.2 grams).
According to the announcement made by the Presidency of Religious Affairs, the Ramadan fitr for 2025 has been determined as 180 TL. When setting the fitr amount, important criteria such as “Hadiths in Islamic sources”, “current economic conditions”, and “an individual’s daily basic food needs” are taken into account. This amount is a minimum baseline; those with better economic circumstances may, of course, give more according to their personal expenditure.
Fitr can be given to individuals who are eligible to receive zakat. However, it is not given to those for whom one is responsible, such as one’s parents, grandparents, children, or grandchildren. Fitr may be given to: • The poor • Orphans • Debtors • Travelers • Students • Widows and the destitute
Fitr should be given to one poor person only and should not be split among several poor individuals. It is recommended to give it to the poor in one’s own locality first. However, it is not discouraged to send it to more needy people in remote areas.
Fitr becomes obligatory from the break of dawn on the morning of the festival. It is preferable to give it before or a few days prior to the festival. It is recommended to give it before the festival prayer. Although it can be given after the festival, it is advised not to delay it.
If someone passes away before the festival or falls into poverty before then, fitr is not obligatory. However, if a child is born before sunrise on the festival morning, fitr should be given for that child.
Fitr can be delivered to those in need in cash or in kind. It can also be given in the form of specified amounts of basic foodstuffs such as wheat, barley, raisins, or dates. Nowadays, most people prefer to give fitr in the form of money.
